Laurel school officials received good news announcing bids for the new school construction came in $3 million dollars under budget, what was hoped for because of the slow recovery of the economy.
What was even better news according to our source was the district was able to include new athletic complexes which I am to believe includes a new football stadium, upgrading class rooms and even purchasing a higher grade of brick.
Earlier in the year Laurel’s Mayor and Council jumped the gun before the bids even went out and waved $750,000 in building and impact fees, even though the town’s balance sheet is slim…make that very slim.
It would be a nice gesture for the Laurel School District to notify the town saying they could now afford to pay those fees. The school district will be able to keep the remaining bond money as a reserve to do other maintenance upgrades to the new school without asking for further tax increases.
