For me, and for this country it is an insult to think the minimum wage is currently $7.25 an hour. Heck when I graduated in ’56 people working at Dupont and other Fortune 500 companies were making half that; almost 6o years ago.

Just think how little things cost then compared to today.President Obama last night in his State of the Union speech proposed a hike to $9, still not enough for a person to survive with any element of comfort. Surely I know the comments coming from the corporate end how such an increase will force them to shut their doors.

What we won’t hear from those same companies are the record profits they are making along with record dividends to their stock holders.

The President pushed his case for the middle class, almost as extinct as the dinosaurs, but I believe in his heart he knows those proposals won’t fly with either side.

Republican Presidential hopeful and rising GOP star, Marco Rubio of Florida instead of offering solutions to the presidents programs, took the same hard-line as his other Republican friends in Congress and just criticized the president’s programs.

Rubio no doubt is trying to shore up conservative support. When are the Republicans going to come up with alternative plans instead of being critical of what is trying to be done to boost the economy?

The only answer I can come up with is..they don’t have a clue!

  1. The corporations may kick and scream BUT in the end you and I will pay because they will just raise their prices to cover the increase in wages. The financial news today via AP already stated that the Fast Food industry alone would have to raise their prices 24.6% just to cover the wage increase. Several executives interviewed from the industry already said that they would have no problem raising prices to cover the wage increase. In my opinion(which counts for NOTHING) most minimum wage workers already underperform! Just like entitlement programs give them more so they can give us less, there is NO incentive here just more handouts at the cost of those of us who do work and hustle. Just more proof that Obamma is exactly the Moron that we think that he is!!!!!!!!

    • Woke up this morning to a dead battery in my truck. Could you please write something about this on your blog so John can reply how Obama caused this to happen.

  2. You guys and your partisan politics. Maybe someday you will realize that neither the D’s nor the R’s give a damn about you, your wages or your costs of living. Dem’s calling for an increase to $9 an hour is nothing more than feel good politics. Its not a living wage in this country and everyone knows it. But, in an effort to preserve the image of giving a damn, some arbitrary number is thrown out as a bone. The R’s scream foul, the D’s point fingers, all the while Rome burns.

Why is it that history is always ignored when attempting to promote a party line. Let me ask you a question Frank. Do you feel that your social security annual increases are keeping up with the real increase in your cost of living? I would imagine you, like most, see your weekly food, gas, etc. expenses going up at ever increasing rates while your benevolent government tells you there is, in fact, next to no inflation. Ever scratch your head and wonder why? Well, try this on.

Soon after Bill Clinton took office the BLS (Bureau of Lies and Shams) changed the consumer price index (CPI). Under the old system the CPI was measured based on current prices of a standard, consistent basket of goods. The BLS changed this to a weighting of items in the basket and then again to what’s called a “geometric weighting”. The net result is that items increasing in prices were given less weight in the CPI calculations than items falling in price. This was supposed to replicate the idea that as prices increased, consumers would alter there purchases, therefore, this would balance out as a lower inflation.

But, our benevolent government did not stop there, since then the CPI has been modified three additional times. First it was “hedonic adjustments”. The simply stated that although you may have paid 20% more for that fancy washing machine, the added cost is offset by the increase in pleasure you derive pushing electronic buttons instead of turning dials (yea, you can’t make this crap up). Then came “intervention analysis”. This CPI change attempted to smooth out volatility in fast moving prices such as gasoline. The end result was that increasing prices are smoothed lower while lowering prices are also smoothed lower. Great huh?

The latest scam is known as “chained CPI”. Chained CPI says that if the price of new your strip goes up, you will buy ground round instead. And if ground round goes up, you will buy ground chuck. I guess if ground chuck goes up you will buy cat food, who knows. Anyway, the idea is that as prices go up, you will alter your purchases to a lower cost item, therefore you have not incurred any cost of living increase.

All this tweaking of CPI has resulted in a permanent misrepresentation of inflation which results in a reduction in the standard of living for everyone, and especially for those on a fixed income based on CPI increases, and a reason for politicians to claim $9 an hour is a living wage.

So while the D’s are crying for a measly increase in a minimum wage which does not even modestly reflect the actual increases in the cost of living and the R’s scream about the damage it will do, take a moment to reflect on why, regardless of which party is in control of the process, our standards of living are continuing to fall.

Oh, and by the way, I hope you are not basing your premise that the economy is improving on the performance of the stock market. The market simply represents the misallocation of trillions of dollars of excess money in the system as a result of the Fed’s money printing. It is a casino for the top 5% of our population who control over 70% of the wealth of this country.

    • Thirty years ago I married my husband and I quit working and did not have to worry about bringing in income to support myself. But prior to that when I was single, I was making more than $9.00 an hour and like most people breathed a sigh of relief that I made it through another month. Now thirty years later, I have no idea what this country should be doing, but I do know that i could not support myself even if I had no children on $7.25 an hour and there are some women or men working for that amount of money and having to try to support children on that wage. I could not have done it 30 years ago and with inflation I know I could not do it now. I had never been on a vacation in my life until I married my husband because I felt I could not afford a vacation. I normally worked through my vacation week and got paid for it. Thirty years ago you barely made it on that wage. Now as a result of that cheap wage, they are probably collecting food stamps.WIC and Medicaid. Even at $9.00 I could not support myself. Neither of these wages will support a family. You would have to rent a dump in order to afford to pay the rent and utilities, insurance for some ragged vehicle, gasoline, buy clothing in a thrift store, pay a dentist (Medicaid won’t pay for dentists unless you are a child). There is probably babysitting expense and there is soap for bathing, soap to do dishes and to wash clothes, toilet paper and food stamps does not pay for this expense. Then there is always an expense that you never expect to have to pay. Just think of the anxiety and stress these people live with everyday. They must go to bed worried sick and wake up worried sick, too. I even forgot to add that there are birthdays for children, Christmas, Easter, the tooth fairy and every other thing under the sun that could come up. People talk about welfare clients as if they are living high on the hog. I will tell you one thing, I used to be on the road visiting these welfare homes when I was a social worker, and they were DUMPS where the people lived. If I even thought I would have to live in dumps like they lived, I would be so depressed. I never saw one client in 9 years that ever lived in what I called a decent home. Yes, I know thre are people who refuse to work even for minimum wage. They are disabled, CROOKS OR BUMS. Our country will never be without that problem. So everytime we get ready to run someone down over collecting government benefits……….. especially the ones that are working I think we should think of the cheap wage these people are working for out in the public. What do we expect them to do?

      • There is one more thing I would like to add. The majority of the people in the world do not know how to handle money. One reason is because parents provide so much for them that they expect to live in the same manner when they get on their own. That always proves to be a problem. Then there are the other parents who never learned to manage money so how do you expect their kids to manage money? They have never even attempted to teach their kids how to manage money. They can’t even manage their own money. I don’t think I have ever heard of a class that teaches young people how to manage money. I don’t know of anyone who could teach a class on how to survive on $9.00 an hour in this day and time.

  3. Jeff, I would hate to dissappoint so I will explain, it is very simple; for 4 years, according to Obamma, EVERYTHING was Bush’s fault. So now since the most recent president to blame things on is Obamma it is Obamma’s fault because he failed to do anything about global warming and the extended period of cold mornings, caused by global warming caused your battery to fail to start your car, and probably the fact that out of control inflation under Obamma kept you from being able to afford a new battery.

  4. “The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. … Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here. Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.” …….. Senator Barack Obama 2006

  5. Maybe we are looking at this from the wrong angle! Maybe it’s not wages that are too low but the price we are paying for everything is too high!!!

  6. Getting warmer. But the recent price increases are not a result of wage growth. Wages, adjusted for inflation, have been falling for decades. No, the current inflation in price of the things you need is a direct result of the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy and lack of fiscal restraint by the government. The Fed is doing what it does best, blow bubbles, only this time there is no safe exit. In it’s desire to prop up prices and keep it’s banker/owner’s happy, the Fed has boxed itself into a never ending policy of low interest rates and money printing. The result is higher prices and lower wages for the rest of us. It all works until it doesn’t. All bubbles pop. The next pop will be the last.

  7. I listened with interest today to a Sussex county long time businessman discusss on the radio this $9 per hour issue. He stated that it is real simple as far as he and the other small business owners are concerned; they will just do away with jobs if they have to pay that. So his question was; ,what is better, jobs that pay minimum wage or no jobs that pay $9 per hour?

  8. John you know that is BS; businesses have to maintain a certain level of jobs to run their operations and to keep up with orders. You think Micky D is not going to have less in the kitchen, and only one person at the counter; of course not or people will go where they can be served.
My question is to these businesses who have the largest surplus of cash they have ever had why aren’t they giving the employees they have raises; raises are not keeping up with the cost of living, yet CEO salaries are going through the roof.

    • To answer your question: these business profits and CEO salaries are so great because that’s how they have been taught to to think by the ultimate leader in greed and corruption: The United States Government!!!!!!!
And it is not BS; I left the corporate world mainly because they do exactly that; more, more, more, with less, less, less!! Just one example; I was managing a store that Took 175 employees to operate at minimum, bare bones drop dead was told that I had to have a minimum of 175 people to run the store BUT on my staffing matrix and expense budget I was only ALLOWED to operate with 130 people AND had to keep my average hourly rate below $8.94 per hour. This is just one example this is how they operate everyday this is not just an extenuating circumstance. These companies are GREEDY and they do not care about anything but their own pockets I saw companies lose many, many good people because they are just greedy and don’t care. I would bet a lot of money BASED ON MY FIRSTHAND EXPERIENCE NOT ON BS that these companies would cut many jobs if minimum wage were raised to $9.00 per hour. I know that you do not want to hear this but this is, unfortunately TRUE!!!!! NO BS!!!!!!!

      • Unfortunately all minimum wages do is ensure that people without skills to justify the wage will be unemployed. To continue the corporate mantra of doing more with less (better known as increased productivity), uneducated, unskilled (poor) labor will be hurt the most as employers seek better quality candidates to fill bottom level jobs..

    • It is not the employers responsibility to ensure wages keep up with some arbitrary cost of living. Wages are set by P&L. These businesses are in the business of making a profit, not maintaining lifestyles. Your loss of purchasing power and living standard is better blamed on the Federal Reserve than Wall Street or any cash hoarding company. Maybe you should direct your question to your government and ask them why, when a deflationary cycle hits and prices start falling, the first thing they do is cut interest rates and print money in an attempt to get inflation moving again.
