Visited Wal-Mart this morning, perhaps the cheapest wage performer in the world. I see where they have replaced several of their cashiers with self-check out units.

Could this be another sign of the times cutting back labor, or labor’s fault because they don’t like to work? This morning only one cashier showed for work, the other two never called in sick, kiss my foot or anything.

It’s easy to blame corporations for the pitiful condition of fewer jobs in this country, but we also have to take some blame.

  1. From an internal email obtained by Bloomberg:

“In case you haven’t seen a sales report these days, February MTD sales are a total disaster,” Jerry Murray, Wal-Mart’s vice president of finance and logistics, said in a Feb. 12 e-mail to other executives, referring to month-to-date sales. “The worst start to a month I have seen in my ~7 years with the company…. That points to our competitive landscape, which means everyone is suffering and probably worse than we are”

“We have to fight against the tougher economic environment to earn a bigger share of a smaller consumer spending pie” The company notes the end of the payroll tax cut by Obama and says “We need to stop the stupid.”

    • So when Al Gore sold his TV station for a profit he made sure the employees got a share, or Kerry when Heinz ketchup was just sold, employees got a share. Bill Gates made billions and he made sure his employees got a share or Steve Jobs at Apple made sure the employees got a share and what did they do for their employees, that’s right they moved the jobs overseas, so they could have a higher profit margin.

      • Apple and Microsoft did not sell, as usual you only read the part you wanted to read. Name an Apple product made in the US or Microsoft, even the technical representatives are not US based.

    • They didn’t do anything for their employee’s Frank. But why should they? Do their poor employee conditions keep you from shopping in their stores? What about the conditions of the employees in foreign countries making the products, do their conditions keep you from shopping at Walmart? Maybe its the pull down effect Walmart has on the local economy, forcing local businesses to reduce profits and wages to compete, that keeps you from shopping at Walmart. Or, are you like millions of other Americans who’s only concern is the low price paid for the goods you purchase allowing you to stretch your ever falling in value dollar a little further

Me, I still shop at Walmart (although it is done with a sense of disgust as I truly despise the experience).

      • I feel guilt when I go to Walmart. Normally I shop to Food Lion as it is not that far away, but when possible I go to Walmart for my dog food because each little Cesar’s dog food container is 15 cents higher per container in Food Lion than it is in Walmart. I buy 120 containers a month so it does add up.

  2. To all of you who don”t know shit about corporate america! Don’t listen to Frank!!! Sales and profits reports do not mean anything !!! I worked for corporateAmerica and I can tell you truth. If you want to know about Corporate America: just ask me !!!

  3. From Walmart’s just reported Q4 earnings statement:

“We are confident that our low prices will continue to resonate, as families adjust to a reduced paycheck and increased gas prices,”

    Here’s to hope and change!

  4. Frank, you also went to Walmart late in the month. Walmart staff’s stores based on the monthly government distribution of food stamps and disability checks. Food Lion does the same thing.

    • Food Stamp issuance has changed…it is spread out through the entire month from the 2nd of each month through the 17th. All disability checks are not received the first or third, either….some receive it the 3rd week of the month.
I despise WALMART and the way they treat their employees(especially females) ….and do not shop there.

      • As a former Wally World manager I can say that they do staff based on entitlement distribution; thay put on 3 or 4 extra cashiers from the 3rd to the 10th of the month. I also despise Wally World and I witnessed first hand their mis-treatment of female employees!!!

  5. Thanks John, for confirming how crappy female employees are treated. Guess they will have to rework staff since food benefits distributing dates have changed!
