Being a senior citizen, and nearing the age when I may need the care from others, I was somewhat shocked by a recent column in Dear Abby.
Apparently 90% of elder abuse happens at the hands of a family member or a caregiver, and the descriptions of the kinds of treatment are frightening and not suitable to publish according to Jeanne Phillips, daughter of Abby to print.
The U.S. Administration on Aging estimates that as many as 5 million seniors are abused or neglected each year in the U.S. Shameful! I understand as we age we can get a little cranky, and when our health fails we can get messy and be a burden on everyone especially our siblings. And having been a care taker I can tell you it is confining and 24/7 duties.
Usually the abused elderly have no other option but to take what they are delivered in care.
But we as parents didn’t exactly have a honeymoon raising our kids. A shame to be treated without respect.
