Pope Francis in my opinion is the most progressive Pope we Catholics have seen since Pope John. I believe he knows the churches doctrine and teachings are not in the 21st century and his church is losing Catholics by the thousands, that something needs to be done.
He is one of us, I think he understands the working person’s struggles; how far he can go to modernize the church remains to be seen.
Yesterday he reached out to gays saying, “If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and had good will, who am I to judge?” My feelings all along, a view I have written about and often criticized for writing, and certainly a stand not in agreement with my church.
While his comments won’t signal any change in church policy, Catholic teaching still holds that homosexual acts are “intrinsically disordered.” But it was the tone of his remarks that left the impression we can agree to disagree and that the church is more inclusive and merciful rather than critical and disciplinary.
That’s all we can hope for.
